Understanding Your Air Conditioning System

Your air conditioner is one of the most important pieces of equipment in your home. The AC keeps your indoor environment cool and comfortable, especially when you’re trying to combat unpleasant summertime heat. Unfortunately, a lot of people take their air conditioner for granted and only start worrying when something goes wrong and the AC isn't cooling your home properly.

In this regard, it’s in your best interest to understand the function of different parts of your air conditioner. By knowing what makes your AC tick, you’ll appreciate your air conditioner better and make it a habit to keep it in good condition.

How Does Your AC Work?

As soon as you turn your AC on, it starts drawing warm air from the surrounding area. Then the AC sends the warm air over the evaporator coils, where the air’s heat and moisture are absorbed by the refrigerant. The refrigerant is a unique coolant fluid that circulates through the coils of your air conditioner and easily transitions from liquid to gas and back to a liquid as it travels through your HVAC unit.

Once the air is cooled, it’s blown back into your home. However, the air conditioner still needs to remove the heat that the refrigerant has absorbed. To do this, the AC will pump the heated refrigerant to the compressor or condenser. In this stage, the compressor will return pressure to the refrigerant to bring the coolant back to its liquid state. From here, the refrigerant will pass through the condenser coil and release the heat outside with the help of your exhaust fan. Afterward, the refrigerant will return to the inside air handler and the cooling process is repeated.

Regular AC Maintenance is Important

Now that you know more about different parts of the air conditioning system and how each one operates, it’s vital that your air conditioner is well taken care of. If any of the AC components break or become severely worn, the entire cooling process will be inefficient.

That said, having your AC professionally maintenanced on a regular basis is a key component to keeping it in good condition and functional.
